Basic Studies 2016-2017

1ST YEAR (Basic 1)

This course offers an introduction to shooting with and handling reflex cameras and knowledge of digital photographic techniques through a dynamic and attractive programme that also fosters a passion for photography. Starting from the assumption that the student has no knowledge of the subject, the entire array of concepts and functions needed to handle the camera will be explored, the importance of composition as the cornerstone of the photographic image will be emphasised and everything that has been studied will be reinforced with practice both outdoors and in the studio. Students will learn the basics of digital retouching and how to edit their images with Photoshop to lend their photos emphasis and visual interest. The programme is completed by studying the images of photographic masters and learning the secrets of visual communication.

Students need to have a reflex camera (not compact) and a laptop with a professional editing program installed.

2nd YEAR (Basic 2)

Following the pattern set by Basic 1, students will receive training in the art of seeing as a medium for understanding the concepts of the photographic image. The course focuses on the content of images, on learning to capture an idea or a feeling in a graphic way and communicating it in photographic language. This idea will then be applied to the following thematic blocks: landscape, reportage, studio portraiture, portraiture against a background, still lifes and night-time photography, among others. By doing practical exercises students will take their first steps towards discovering their own individual style. Colour, editing, composition, lighting and flash photography will be studied. This year’s training is completed with the quarterly subjects of Digital Laboratory I and introduction to the Studio.

Students need to have a reflex camera (not compact) and a laptop with a professional editing program installed.
